Cain Contracting served as General
Contractor for emergency repairs
at the
U.S. Department of Commerce Herbert
C. Hoover building at 14th and
Constitution Avenue, Washington,
DC. The project encompassed repairing
the lead-coated copper flashing
and re-sealing all joints with
20-year sealant, renovating the
top perimeter cornice including
repairs to the stone cornice,
and installing 60 mil EPDM gutter
liner.
Refurbishing the existing lead-coated
copper flashing included restoring
all joints, priming and preparation
of contact points, installing new
backer rod, installing 20-year silicone
sealant, and completely restoring
all drains and drain flashing. Approximately
120,000 linear feet of joint restoration
was required along with installation
of new copper flashing in places
where the original panels were missing
or damaged.
Cain
Contracting prepared a template
for replacing seven pieces of the
Indiana
limestone cornice. Stone was removed
and replaced according to government
instructions. In addition, approximately
350 feet of stone was repaired by
removing delaminated limestone with
chipping hammers and patching using
Jahn limestone mortar.
Finally, 3,000 linear feet of 60
mil EPDM gutter liner was installed
to the 1.5 million sf building, which
encompasses three city blocks and
is the 3rd largest Federal Building
in the Washington, DC metro area.
